RF microneedling in Mirdif, Dubai does two things in one pass — needles
create controlled micro-injury while radiofrequency energy heats the dermis at the needle tip.
That combination treats skin laxity and deeper acne scarring more effectively than
microneedling alone, and it does so without depending on skin colour, which matters
enormously in this city. At Dermabloom Medical Center, Villa 44C, 83rd Street, Mirdif,
Dr Sarah Magdy performs it. Call 04 268 8226.
This is a step up in both effect and downtime from standard microneedling. Expect three to
seven days of visible recovery, a grid pattern on the skin for a day or two, and a result that
builds over three to six months. If you want no downtime, this is not the treatment.
This is a medical procedure performed following a face-to-face consultation. It is not
suitable for everyone — note the pacemaker and implant section below.
How It Differs From Standard Microneedling
The needling component is the same principle as
Dermapen
microneedling: micro-channels trigger collagen induction. RF adds a second mechanism
entirely.
Radiofrequency energy is delivered from the needle tips into the dermis, heating tissue to
a controlled temperature at a set depth. That thermal injury does two things mechanical
needling cannot: existing collagen fibres contract immediately, and the healing response
produces substantially more new collagen than needling alone.
Practical difference: standard microneedling improves texture and scarring; RF
microneedling improves texture, scarring and laxity. If tightening is part
of what you want, mechanical needling will not deliver it.
Needle depth is adjustable — commonly around 0.5mm for delicate areas up to 4mm over the
jawline and deeper still for body work — and depth, energy and pulse duration are set per
zone.
Why It Suits Dubai’s Population
This is the strongest clinical argument for the treatment here.
Ablative and pigment-targeting lasers work by aiming energy at a chromophore — usually
melanin. On Fitzpatrick IV to VI skin, that carries a real risk of post-inflammatory
hyperpigmentation, which in this UV climate can take many months to fade and sometimes never
fully resolves.
Radiofrequency is essentially colour-blind. It heats tissue water rather than targeting
melanin, and insulated needles limit heating of the epidermis. A review of 42 studies reports
RF microneedling can be used repeatedly and safely including in darker skin phototypes,
precisely because insulated needles limit epidermal heating compared with ablative lasers.
That said, it is not risk-free on deeper skin. Over-aggressive settings can
still trigger pigmentation. Conservative energy, correct spacing between sessions and strict
sun avoidance afterwards are what keep it safe — which is a matter of who is operating the
device, not which device it is.
What It Treats
- Acne scarring — the strongest indication. Rolling and boxcar scars
respond best; ice-pick scars are slower and may need combined approaches. - Skin laxity and early jowling — mild to moderate. The thermal component
is what makes this possible. - Jawline and submental definition — improved contour where laxity is
mild. - Enlarged pores and rough texture — reliable improvement.
- Fine lines and crepiness, including the neck.
- Stretch marks and body scarring, which need more sessions.
- Overall skin thickness and quality.
What It Will Not Do
- Replace a facelift. It improves mild to moderate laxity. Significant
sagging or heavy jowling needs surgical assessment, and anyone promising surgical results
from a device is overselling. - Add volume. Hollow cheeks or temples need
filler. - Remove dynamic wrinkles. That is
botulinum
toxin. - Clear active acne. Needling over inflamed lesions spreads bacteria.
Active acne is controlled first, scarring treated after — that sequence is not
negotiable. - Treat melasma. Heat can aggravate melasma. If you have it, say so, as
it changes the plan.
The Risk Most Pages Omit: Fat Loss
Deep RF delivered at high energy can affect subcutaneous fat. Some devices market that
deliberately for contouring under the chin — but on a face that does not have fat to spare, or
at over-aggressive settings, the same effect causes unwanted fat atrophy: a
hollowed, gaunt look that is difficult to correct and may need filler to address.
It is not common, and it is avoidable. It is avoided by matching depth and energy to your
facial fat distribution rather than running a standard protocol on every patient — which is
why assessment matters more than the brand name on the handpiece.
If you are already lean or have thin facial fat pads, raise it. Settings should be
conservative, and in some cases a different treatment is the better choice.
Pacemakers, Implants and Metal — an RF-Specific Issue
This does not apply to mechanical microneedling and is genuinely important.
Radiofrequency energy can interfere with implanted electronic devices.
RF microneedling is not suitable if you have a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator,
neurostimulator, cochlear implant or insulin pump. Metal implants, plates or
permanent dental work in or near the treatment area also need discussion before any settings
are chosen.
Declare all of these at consultation. If you are unsure whether an implant is affected,
tell us and we will establish it before treating.
Your Appointment
- Assessment. Scar type, laxity, skin thickness, Fitzpatrick
classification, facial fat distribution, melasma history, and full medical history
including implants, medications and recent isotretinoin. - Plan and consent. Depths, energy, zones, session count, downtime and
risks — including pigmentation and fat atrophy — agreed in writing first. - Numbing. Topical anaesthetic for 45 to 60 minutes. This treatment needs
proper numbing time; rushing it makes for an unpleasant session. - Treatment. Systematic passes with depth and energy adjusted per zone.
You will feel heat and pressure. Thirty to sixty minutes depending on area. - Immediate cooling and a soothing barrier product, plus physical
SPF. - Course. Typically three to four sessions four to six weeks apart, with
the result assessed three months after the final session.
Recovery — Plan for It
- Day 0. Marked redness, heat, swelling and tightness. Skin feels like
moderate sunburn. - Days 1–2. Redness persists; you may see a faint grid
pattern of pinpoint marks where the needles entered. Normal, and it fades. - Days 3–5. Dryness, roughness and light flaking. Do not pick.
- Days 5–7. Skin looks normal for most people.
- Weeks 4–12 and beyond. The actual result, as collagen remodels —
continuing to improve for up to six months after the final session.
Aftercare: no makeup for 24 hours; gentle cleansing only; no retinol,
acids or exfoliants for one week; no gym, sauna, steam or swimming for 48 to 72 hours; and
strict sun avoidance with high-factor SPF. That last point is not advisory in
Dubai — heated, freshly needled skin exposed to this UV index is the main route to
pigmentation, and that pigment is harder to treat than what you came in for.
Risks
Common and expected: redness for two to five days, swelling, a temporary
grid pattern, dryness and flaking, and tenderness.
Less common: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly on
Fitzpatrick IV to VI with over-aggressive settings; prolonged redness lasting weeks; tracking
or grid marks that take longer to resolve; cold sore reactivation, so declare a history;
infection; and aggravation of melasma.
Uncommon but significant: burns from excessive energy; fat atrophy as
described above; and scarring, particularly with a keloid tendency.
Almost every item on that list is a settings-and-assessment problem rather than a device
problem.
Who Should Not Have It
Not suitable if you have a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator,
neurostimulator, cochlear implant or insulin pump; are pregnant or breastfeeding; have active
acne, skin infection or a cold sore in the area; have a keloid or hypertrophic scarring
history; or have active eczema, psoriasis or rosacea in the treatment area.
Discuss carefully before booking if you have taken isotretinoin
(Roaccutane) recently — timing needs individual assessment; have metal implants, plates or
extensive dental work near the area; have melasma; have thin facial fat or a lean build; take
blood thinners; have diabetes or impaired wound healing; have a bleeding disorder; have recent
sunburn or a fresh tan; or have had recent peels, laser or injectables, where sequencing
matters.
RF Microneedling or Standard Microneedling?
- Choose RF microneedling if laxity is part of your concern, if you have
established acne scarring, if you want jawline or neck tightening, or if you have deeper
skin and want an alternative to laser. More downtime, stronger effect. - Choose
Dermapen with
mesotherapy if your concern is texture, pores and general quality without
laxity, if you want less downtime, or if your skin is very sensitive or reactive. For
reactive skin,
Dermapen with
salmon DNA is gentler again.
Price in Dubai
RF microneedling in Dubai commonly starts from around AED 1,800 to AED 2,000 per session
for face, with full face and neck and larger areas rising from there — some clinics quote
around AED 4,000 per session. Course packages are widely available, for example around
AED 4,500 for three sessions.
Since three to four sessions produce the result, ask for the course price rather than a
single-session figure. Be wary of heavily discounted offers on this treatment in particular —
energy settings and needle cartridges are where corners get cut, and under-treatment produces
nothing while over-treatment causes the pigmentation and fat loss described above. Dermabloom
quotes a firm price and course plan at consultation — call
04 268 8226. Cosmetic treatment is not covered by UAE health
insurance.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is RF microneedling different from normal microneedling?
Standard microneedling creates micro-channels that trigger collagen induction. RF
microneedling adds radiofrequency energy delivered from the needle tips, heating the
dermis at a set depth — which contracts existing collagen immediately and produces
substantially more new collagen. In practice, standard needling improves texture and
scarring; RF improves texture, scarring and laxity.
Is it safe on darker skin tones?
Generally yes, and it is a better option than ablative laser. Radiofrequency heats
tissue water rather than targeting melanin, and insulated needles limit epidermal
heating — a review of 42 studies reports it can be used repeatedly and safely
including in darker phototypes. It is not risk-free though: over-aggressive settings
can still cause pigmentation, so conservative energy and strict sun avoidance
afterwards matter.
Can I have it if I have a pacemaker or metal implants?
Not with a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, neurostimulator, cochlear implant or
insulin pump — radiofrequency can interfere with implanted electronic devices. Metal
implants, plates or extensive dental work in or near the treatment area need
discussion before settings are chosen. Declare all of these at consultation; this does
not apply to mechanical microneedling.
How much downtime is there?
Three to seven days. Marked redness and swelling on the day, a faint grid pattern
of pinpoint marks for a day or two, then dryness and light flaking around days three
to five. Most people look normal by day five to seven. Plan treatment so recovery
falls across a weekend, and never book it days before an event.
Can it cause facial fat loss?
It can, at excessive depth and energy. Deep RF affects subcutaneous fat — some
devices market that deliberately for contouring under the chin, but on a face without
fat to spare it causes unwanted hollowing that is difficult to correct. It is
uncommon and avoidable by matching settings to your facial fat distribution. If you
are lean or have thin fat pads, raise it at consultation.
Will it replace a facelift?
No. It improves mild to moderate laxity and can sharpen the jawline where sagging
is limited. Significant sagging or heavy jowling needs surgical assessment, and anyone
promising surgical results from a device is overselling. It also adds no volume —
hollow cheeks or temples need filler.
How many sessions, and what does it cost in Mirdif, Dubai?
Typically three to four sessions four to six weeks apart, with the result assessed
three months after the last one. Dubai pricing commonly starts around AED 1,800 to
AED 2,000 per session for face, rising for larger areas, with course packages such as
around AED 4,500 for three sessions. Ask for the course price. Call 04 268 8226.
I have melasma — can I have this treatment?
Tell us, because it changes the plan. Heat can aggravate melasma, so this treatment
is approached cautiously or avoided in affected areas, and melasma itself needs
pigment-directed medical treatment rather than energy. Getting the diagnosis right
first is exactly why this is assessed by a dermatologist.

RF microneedling is a medical procedure performed only following a face-to-face
consultation with a licensed medical practitioner. It is unsuitable for patients with
pacemakers or other implanted electronic devices. It improves mild to moderate laxity and is
not a substitute for surgery. Risks include pigmentation, prolonged redness, burns and fat
atrophy, and depend substantially on treatment settings. Results are course-dependent and
individual results vary. Dermabloom Medical Center — DHA Licence No. 2528391.
